Online Check in for Disney World

The Walt Disney World Resort has announced that starting in January 2009, they will begin to offer online check-in at their resorts. This new service will allow guests to check in for up to 10 days in advance of your stay.

When guests check in to the specially designated area, they will have an envelope waiting for them that contains the Key to the World Card. You simply present your ID to the cast member, and pick up your packet.

For those who have already made reservations for after this date, Disney will be sending emails out to give more information about the process.

It is important to note that reservations will not be able to be changed through this service. The Disneyland Resort is not yet participating in the service.

Delta Sets Capacity Cut Due to Economic Slowdown

In an effort to cut costs during the current economic slowdown, Delta Air Lines has announced that it will cutting capacity by up to 10 percent, and is also considering staff reductions, according to a memo to employees from CEO Richard Anderson and President Edward Bastian. Cutting capacity generally means that the cost of the remaining flights increase. Book you airfare now if you will be flying in the upcoming months.

The electronic boarding pass pilot enables passengers to download their boarding pass on their cell phones or personal digital assistants (PDAs). This innovative approach streamlines the customer experience while heightening the ability to detect fraudulent boarding passes. Each paperless boarding pass is displayed as an encrypted two-dimensional bar code along with passenger and flight information. TSA security officers use hand-held scanners to validate the authenticity of the boarding pass at the checkpoint.

Ten airports are piloting this technology: Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Logan International Airport (BOS), Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), San Antonio International Airport (SAT), Indianapolis International Airport (IND) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and Cleveland Hopkins Airport (CLE).

Once the hand-held scanners are deployed nationwide, TSA will also use this technology to track wait times using standardized automated data collected at checkpoints. This development is expected to happen within about a year.

Carnival Fantasy Returns to Service with Upgrades

Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Fantasy has resumed sailing from New Orleans following a 28-day dry-dock that added a new water park, an adults-only area, a redesigned main pool and a new Circle C facility for 12- to 14-year-olds. The suites and dining venues were also renovated, and new dining options such as a Mongolian wok and rotisserie were added.

A signature element of Carnival Fantasy’s upgrades is Carnival WaterWorks, an expansive aqua park towering over Verandah Deck. The open-air facility includes a 300-foot-long spiral water slide along with twin 82-foot-long racing slides and various water spray apparatus. Located aft on Promenade Deck is Serenity, an exclusive adults-only retreat. Serenity offers plush chaise lounges and chairs, oversized umbrellas, and two large whirlpools. Here, guests can sip icy cocktails and frozen drinks or enjoy a light meal or snack from the nearby Lido restaurant. The third element of the top deck upgrades is a totally redesigned resort-style pool located mid-ship on Lido Deck featuring thatched roofing and large faux palm trees. The pool now has oversized umbrellas, comfortable deck chairs and a tiled faux beach encircling the pool’s edge.

The Celebration and Jubilee main dining rooms, as well as the causal poolside Windows on the Sea Bar & Grill, have been renovated with new interiors and updated carpeting, tile work and furniture. Windows on the Sea also features a new Mongolian wok where guests can select meat, vegetables, and noodles and have the dish prepared before their eyes. A rotisserie has been added with roasted chicken, beef and lamb, along with side dishes and accompaniments. A new Circle C facility catering to 12- to 14-year-olds has also been incorporated into Atlantic Deck forward. The center features a high-tech sound and lighting system, plasma-screen TVs displaying movies and music videos, a touch-screen jukebox, and gaming pods with the latest video games and consoles. Cosmetic enhancements were also made to other shipboard areas, including renovated guest corridors and public bathrooms, new décor and technical enhancements to the Electricity dance club, new artwork, and updated furniture and fixtures in many staterooms. Additionally, all of the ship’s 54 suites were remodeled with updated wall coverings, carpeting, tile work and lighting fixtures, as well as new bathrooms. A number of connecting staterooms were incorporated as well.

The 70,000-ton, 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy currently operates four- and five-day Western Caribbean cruises from New Orleans. Four-day cruises depart Thursdays and visit Cozumel while five-day voyages depart Mondays and Saturdays and call at Cozumel and Progreso. Carnival Fantasy will sail from New Orleans through Nov. 5, 2009, then reposition to Mobile, Ala., to operate year-round four- and five-day cruises starting Nov. 16. Carnival Fantasy will be replaced in New Orleans by the 2,758-passenger Carnival Triumph in November 2009. Carnival is accepting reservations on the Carnival Fantasy’s departures from both New Orleans and Mobile.

to use a new official document – a wallet-sized Passport Card that
contains an identity chip that can be read from 30 feet away and is

Just announced today, Allegiant Air is coming to Lexington, Kentucky. This will add another low cost option for flights into the Orlando and the Tampa area. Service begins in early November. A couple of items that you should be aware of is that each destination will have only two flights per week. The Orlando market is serviced by flying into the Sanford International Airport and not the Orlando International Airport. This means that you will not be able to access the Disney Magical Express transportation, but with rates starting at $89 each way, you may save enough to rent that red convertible that I have been dreaming about. I have been fortunate to spend a few days in Miami to get a better understanding of what Carnival does to make their cruises special. It has been an awesome event. We will be visiting five ships. Today we visited Carnival's Imagination. The Imagination and Inspiration are two of Carnival's ships that have undergone a $40 million renovation. This ships are exciting! The enhancements include the wonderful Waterworks area for the kids (and adults like me!). Some of the longest slides at sea will keep the kids at heart entertained for the entire cruise. They have also installed misting and water play areas for younger kids and adults who want to stay cool.

For the adults, the Serenity area is an adults only area of the deck to relax. This is the place to enjoy quietness as you relax and watch the waves of the ship. LAS VEGAS ROOM RATES are lower than they've been in five years, according to a survey conducted by LasVegasAdvisor.com, a company that tracks Las Vegas room prices and discounts. In a recent survey of 84 casino hotels, the website found that more than half of the hotels are offering July rates of $50 or less. High-end resorts are slashing prices, too, the survey found, with properties including Luxor, MGM Grand, Flamingo, Hard Rock, the Mirage, the Palms, Planet Hollywood and Paris Las Vegas each publishing room rates below $90. In fact, rates at higher-end properties showed the greatest drop over July 2007: The Flamingo's rates are $60 this year, down from $79 last year; Hard Rock: $69/$99; MGM Grand: $59/$96; the Palms: $82/$128; and Green Valley Ranch: $76/$139. Off the Strip, Palace Station Hotel & Casino posted rates for July at $19.99, the lowest price recorded for a Las Vegas casino hotel room since 2004. The survey also reported a marked increase in show deals and food discounts.

Airlines' Woes May Cause Fliers Serious Headaches

In the tough times that are facing the airlines, the airlines may be leaving a very sour taste in the minds of their much needed customers. With higher fuel prices, we have seen the airlines begin charging for everything. Now, we are seeing the next phase...reducing flights. An article in the Wall Street Journal sheds light on the severity of the cutbacks...

The carriers' cutbacks in flights will take place mostly after the peak summer season. Delta is cutting 13% of its domestic capacity in the second half of 2008. Northwest will cut by up to 9.5% in the fourth quarter. United Airlines, US Airways and Continental will reduce capacity by as much as 14%, 8% and 11% in the fourth quarter, respectively, the report says.

We have contacted all of our customers who were affected. If you booked your own flights, check them immediately to make sure they still exist. I have already noticed that most of the non-stop flights to many destinations from Louisville and Nashville have been cut for this fall. This means layovers and longer flights as well as higher prices.

Cruise Prices: Caribbean increasing and Europe is a Bargain

CARIBBEAN CRUISE PRICING is on the rise while Europe cruise prices are down, according to a Wachovia survey. With capacity up 15% to 20% in Europe this year, Wachovia analyst Tim Conder said that "European pricing remains the most challenging" for the industry but that, after currency benefits are realized, European cruise prices will be only slightly down. Pricing in the Caribbean is up almost 10%, the report said, and Conder said that, despite skyrocketing fuel prices, he remained positive about cruise stocks in general due to the "ongoing overall solid pricing environment despite economic challenges."

HOPING TO ATTRACT more recession-wary Americans, Mexico in June will begin reimbursing the value-added tax charged on purchases made at stores and businesses throughout the country to tourists who arrive by air and cruise ship. Mexico's Ministry of Tourism said in a statement that starting in June tourists will be able to use kiosks at five major airports -- Mexico City, Cancun, Guadalajara, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta -- to reclaim the 15% VAT they've paid on goods totaling at least $115 (1,200 Mexican pesos).

In order to qualify for the refund, the purchases must have been made at approved stores and businesses with credit cards or debit cards issued outside of Mexico, or in cash. Tourists must present their passports when making their purchases and obtain a receipt and an official refund form from the approved merchant. The tax credit will apply to shopping, not to purchases on meals and lodging. Visitors will be able to get half of the VAT in Mexican pesos, up to a maximum of $955 (10,000 Mexican pesos). The rest will be credited electronically to visitors' credit cards or bank accounts within 40 days. Starting in 2009, the program will be phased in at other major airports as well as at cruise ports. The more than 21 million tourists who visited Mexico in 2007 spent $13 billion, making tourism the country's third most important source of revenue.

Is flying cheap a thing of the past?

Flying is by far my choice when traveling long distances. I remember my last driving trip to Disney World when the kids were very young. We left at 8:00pm and drove all night. The kids slept almost the entire way. The drive back home was during the day and almost miserable. The kids were restless in the back. OK, they were fighting; your kids don't fight do they? Everytime we stopped, we lost an hour trying to get everyone back in the car. It actually took 2.5 hours longer to get home than it did to go to Florida. From that day, I decided to determine my Disney trips based upon when we could find cheap flights. Flights to Disney are about 2 hours long. You can actually be in Disney by the time that we lost on our return trip.

Last April, we had roundtrip airfare from Nashville to Orlando for $68 per person! This is a total price; taxes and everything were included. Are those days gone? The discounts on airfare have become very scarce. Delta Airlines have increased their fares 14 times already this year. Many airlines are adding extra fees to their fares. It's hard to really know what you are buying online. I received this email today that talks about the "5 Airline Fees You Should Know About". If you are booking your own airfare, make sure you understand what is happening with your tickets so that you don't get caught paying more than you expected.

I guess it is as official as it has ever been over the past few years. The Homeland and State Departments issued a press release that the official Passport or Pass Card would not be required until June 2009. Many people had been waiting until the last minutes before their cruises not knowing if the federal government would move the requirement date. Now those worries are delayed until next year. Over the past three years, the trend of rising airfare has been very evident. It seems like it always in the news for airlines. Last Friday, United and Continental announced a $50 per ticket increase. This was the fourth straight week that airlines increased their fares. What is a person to do?

The best advice is to plan and purchase early. There are still some good values in the airline business, but they tend to be booked very quickly. Next, it is important to be flexible with your plans. Some days are usally cheaper to fly than others: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Travel during non peak times. Peak flight times will naturally be higher because of deman and include holidays, long weekends and particular destinations (spring break locales during spring breaks). One easy way to save money is to package your airfare with your lodging which may offer discounts that could not be seen if purchased seperately.

Disney's Magic Kingdom

As I start to write this entry, it is 11:00pm and I'm at the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. Due to flight scheduling, I get to spend a little time in the "Happiest Place on Earth." While this is my first visit this year, I have been here over 30 times. My eyes still twinkle like they do for most kids.

Why do I love Disney so much? There are few places that hold themselves to such a high standard. Every "Castmember" treats you with respect and dignity; it doesn't matter if you are staying in the Presidential Suite at the Grand Floridian or in this case an affordable room at Disney's Pop Century Resort, your family will be treated special here.

It's nice to forget about life's cares and to remember what the innocence was like when we were kids. For many parents, our fondest memories are of our kids here. Dylan and I rode Big Thunder Mountain 10 times one day; it's his favorite ride and that was our first father-son only trip. I remember Katlin at 8 months and not sleeping well at the Wilderness Lodge. As l rocked in a secluded chair at 3:00am, a nice cast member brought me hot chocolate.

There is so many activities here. Families can spend quality time together. My wife and I have visited without the kids in order to experience the "older" side of Disney. It is a great place to forget about the job, bills, practice schedules, and focus on us.

It's 2:00am and the Castmembers are telling us "good night." If you haven't been to Disney lately, let us help you plan the most magical trip you will ever take.

I spent today on Royal Caribbean's cruise ship, The Freedom of the Seas. This ship is huge: rock wall, wave rider, ice skating ring, pools, spas, and spacious cabins. Find 14 of your closest friends and book the Presidential Suite; it can be more affordable than you think. If you don't like huge, there are lots of intimate places to rekindle your relationship.
